About Malaria

Malaria is a parasitic infection, spread to humans through the bite of an infected female Anopheles mosquito.

Malaria is a serious vector-borne illness, that can often be life-threatening. The parasitic protozoans consist of 5 species of the genus Plasmodium and are organisms introduced to the blood from the saliva during the bite. Once in the blood, the parasites move to the liver to mature and reproduce.

Symptoms typically include fever and headache, and in severe cases, such as Cerebral Malaria, can lead to coma or death.
